Leptospira vaccines have long been available for active immunisation of dogs. Until recently, all the available vaccines targeted two types of the bacterium (L. interrogans Icterohaemorrhagiae and L interrogans Canicola). Now, there are three new quadrivalent, vaccines containing two additional Leptospira types.
In the article we clearly set out the evidence that relates to vaccines, outline the uncertainties and highlight practical implications. This unbiased review will help practitioners decide with their clients whether they wish to use the new vaccines.
