New veterinary medicines in 2024

In 2024, the Veterinary Medicines Directorate approved a total of 70 veterinary medicinal products (by our count) for marketing in Great Britain (VMD PID) .

By animal species category

In all, 41 products (59%) are for small animals (mainly cats and dogs); 24 (34%) for food-producing animals (a few of which are also for use in horses); and 5 (7%) are specifically for horses.

By therapeutic use

Parasiticides are the most common type of product (representing around a quarter of all authorisations) followed by NSAIDs, vaccines and antibiotics. The rest of the authorisations are made up of a variety of medicines: bismuth, carpomorelin (a brand new drug for cats), dexmedetomidine, fluoxetine, hydrocortisone (an aural formulation), medetomidine, omeprazole (for horses), paracetamol (for pigs), phenylpropanolamine, thiamazole and trilostane.

  • NSAID = 14 (20%)

  • Vaccine = 8 (11%)

  • Aural Antibiotic = 6 (9%)

  • Antibiotic = 5 (7%)

New or generic?

By far, most authorisations (89%) were generic medicines (products authorised on the basis of the data of an already authorised product).

The three completely new products are:

  • Eluracat (carpromorelin) oral solution for cats. POM-V for body weight gain in cats experiencing poor appetite or unintended weight loss resulting from chronic medical conditions

  • Bovilis Cryptium emulsion for injection for cattle. POM-V. For active immunisation of pregnant heifers and cows to raise antibodies in their colostrum against Gp40 of Cryptosporidium parvum, intended for passive immunisation of calves to reduce clinical signs (i.e., diarrhoea) caused by C. parvum.

  • Primun Salmonella E lyophilisate for use in drinking water for chickens POM-V. For active immunisation of chickens to reduce colonisation of internal organs (spleen, liver, caeca and ovaries) and faecal excretion of Salmonella Enteritidis field strains.

 

The five products that contain active ingredients already in authorised products but presented as new formulations are:

  • Bravecto (fluralaner) injection for dogs.

  • Cortotic (hydrocortisone aceponate) ear spray for dogs.

  • Three new trilostane oral formulations for dogs.
