New medicines September 2019

The following medicines have recently been authorised for marketing in the UK:

  • phenylpropanolamine  syrup (brand name  Continence ) for  the management of urinary incontinence associated with urethral sphincter incompetence in the bitch, particularly that associated with  ovariohysterectomy . POM-V . This is an addition to two existing brands ( Propilin  and  Urilin  syrups).

  • selamectin spot-on for cats and dogs (brand name Evicto ). A generic of Stronghold. Treatment and prevention of flea infestations, treatment of ear mites, prevention of heartworm disease ( Dirofilaria immitis ). POM-V tramadol solution for injection for the reduction of mild postoperative pain in dogs ( Tramvetol ) . POM-V bovine respiratory syncytial virus ( NASYM ) vaccine for cattle . POM-V

    Changes to prescribing information

    • Animeloxan 5 mg/ml solution for injection for dogs and cats (a brand of meloxicam ) . The adverse effects section of the SPC (s ection 4.6 ) now include s : “ In very rare cases elevated liver enzymes have been reported. In very rare cases, haemorrhagic diarrhoea, haematemesis and gastrointestinal ulceration have been reported in dogs ” . The change is to make the SPC of this generic product consistent with the reference product ( Metacam ) .

    • Furosoral 10 mg tablets for cats and dogs ( f urosemide ). The contraindications section of the SPC ( 4.3 ) has been updated to include: “ Do not use in acute glomerular nephritis; do not use in patients that have received excessive doses of cardiac glycosides; do not use in combina tion with other loop diuretics.” This change appears to have been made to make the SPC consistent with the SPC or more recently authorised furosemide tablets.

    • Nexgard Spectra 9.375 mg/1.875 mg; 18.75 mg/3.75 mg; 37.5 mg/7.5 mg; 75 mg/15 mg; and 150 mg/30 mg chewable tablets for dogs ( afoxolaner , milbemycin o xime ) . The adverse effects section of the SPC (4.6) has been updated to include: “Erythema and neurological signs (convulsions, ataxia and muscle tremors) have been reported very rarely”
