New medicines

In the past month there have been no new medicine authorisations for small animals. There is one for horses: 

· prednisolone tablets 50mg (Equipred). 

New indication

· Bravecto (fluralaner) chewable tablets and spot-on for dogs is now authorised  ‘For the treatment ofdemodicosis caused by Demodex canis.’

Reclassification

· Ectoline Duo (fipronil+ pyriproxyfen) spot-on range for dogs and cats. The legal distribution category has changed from POM-V to NFA-VPS.

Adverse effects

· Ectoline Duo (fipronil + pyriproxyfen) spot-on range. On adverse effects, the SPC now includes the following information: ‘transient cosmetic effects such as wet appearance or slight scaling may occur at the application site. In very rare cases, according to the accumulated experience on these active ingredients within spot on forms, transient cutaneous reactions at the application site (scaling of the skin), local or general hair loss or itchiness, redness of the skin, and skin discolouration may be seen after use. In very rare instances, hypersalivation, reversible neurologic symptoms (increasedsensitivity to stimuli), depression, nervous symptoms), respiratory signs or vomiting might occur.’

· Advantage (imidacloprid) spot-on solution range for dogs and cats. The SPC now includes: “Imidacloprid is toxic to aquatic organisms.  To avoid adverse effects on aquatic organisms, treated dogs should not be allowed to enter surface water for 48 hours after treatment.”

· Drontal Dog Tasty Bone (febantel + praziquantel+ pyrantel) tablets. The SPC now includes: ‘In very rare cases slight and transient digestive tract disorders such as vomiting and/or diarrhoea may occur.  In individual cases these signs can be accompanied by nonspecific signs such as lethargy, anorexia or hyperactivity.’

· Filavac VHDK C+V (Rabbit haemorrhagic disease virus type 2). The following statement has been removed under "Specialwarning" on the SPC: "No information is available on the safety andefficacy in pet rabbits"

Veterinary Prescriber Specials Database updated

It's sometimes necessary to use an unlicensed medicine when there is no available veterinary or human authorised product to treat an animal. BUt finding out what is available can be difficult and time-consuming. The Veterinary Prescriber Specials Database is a product guide designed to help. It lists special formulations for small animals that are manufactured by veterinary specials manufacturers.
