Introduction

Veterinary Prescriber's Virtual Veterinary Medicines Academy is a place to gain a clear understanding of the evidence, regulations and practical aspects of veterinary medicines use and keep up to date. We help vets to make more informed decisions about treatment options, by providing evidence-based information, which is independent of the influence of pharmaceutical companies.

Our resources support confident and competent prescribing, handling and dispensing of medicines and communication with clients. They promote efficient medicines management that will save time, money and help protect the environment. We understand the issues vets face with regard to finding trustworthy information about medicines.

 Continued professional learning

The library contains succinct, clearly-written modules that take only 15 to 30 mins to complete, because we know how time-pressed veterinary professionals are, and we want to help them save time. Each module is a thoroughly-researched topic drafted by a specialist, then circulated to a wide range of commentators including practising veterinary professionals. A rigorous editing and checking process ensures an accurate published module that is relevant to practice. All the modules include audio files and text, so you can listen as well as read, or download a podcast to listen to at your convenience.

We make sense of the complex nature of medicines information by:

  • providing a succinct and thoroughly referenced summary of the published clinical evidence

  • clearly explaining the context of the information by signposting to official sources on regulatory and professional standards (with the unique Horse's Mouth feature) and referring to national policies and guidelines.

  • distinguishing clearly between fact and opinion

  • pointing out uncertainties

All our content is designed to keep veterinary professionals up-to-date and help with decision-making about medicines, so they can choose the best course of action for the animal. Our modules cover a wide variety of medicines topics: new drug reviews, drug group reviews, authorised medicines and cascade use, and general topics on practical and regulatory aspects of medicines use.

I really do enjoy completing the modules and learning about new (and old) medicines. The module on medicine storage was particularly enlightening. The module on paracetamol completely changed how I use/prescribe it and has been helpful to a few of my own geriatric dogs too. Many thanks to you and the Veterinary Prescriber team!
